Police in Ayrshire have issued a warning to residents over the dangers of 'romance fraud'.
Officers say romance fraud takes place when you've met someone online, and they declare strong feelings for you after a few conversations.
A spokesperson explained: "The chat moves away from social media to emails, phone calls and text messages, and often they don't ask for payment for a few weeks or months.
"However, a scam then comes where there will be an urgent requirement for a sum of money from your new loved one.
"You're convinced to make the payment, and now those requests for money will continue - often with the promise of a 'guaranteed windfall' that never comes.
"Catfishing is the term used to make fake profiles in an attempt to build a relationship with you - often for financial gain."
