SCOTRAIL has said it will take action on a "major safety concern" in a Kilwinning train station car park.

It comes after a concerned local got in touch regarding severely overgrown bushes in the second overflow car park at the railway station.

Ardrossan and Saltcoats Herald: The overgrown bushes have taken over large parts of the second overflow car park.

They shared images of the shrubbery which has encroached on a number of spaces at what is North Ayrshire's busiest station.

The busy stop connects North Ayrshire to both Glasgow and Ayr - and is one of few stations where 'express' trains can still be boarded.

It is often the most popular train station for commuters from the surrounding area and despite having three car parks it is not unknown for each of these to be full at peak times.

This has lead to some desperate parking in the spaces despite the overgrown bushes, or the parking spots not being used at all despite the need for them.

The source said: "ScotRail are refusing to cut the bushes in the Kilwinning station over flow car park - despite the car park being busy and it being a major safety concern.

"Cars are having to park in the spaces that the bushes are taking over causing damage to cars or cars are sticking out into the road to avoided parking in bushes."

They added that this is not a "new" problem within the car park, and has been a major concern for staff over the past few years.

They continued: "I spoke to railway station staff and they advised that they have been reporting it as a safety concern since COVID but they keep getting ignored."

Though the rail operator have now said that they are aware of the issue, and this will be addressed in the near future.

Phil Campbell, ScotRail Customer Operations Director, said: “We’re aware of the overgrown bushes in the overflow carpark at Kilwinning station, and we’re arranging for them to be cut back.”
