A POWER cut is just about the worst-case scenario for any Christmas lights ‘switch-on’ event.
But that very situation faced the organisers of Ardrossan’s festive switch-on as it took place on Friday, November 24.
However, in an outstanding showing of community spirit, locals did not let that put a dampener on what turned out to be a memorable and magical evening.
The power outage, which affected large parts of the town, meant that the lights could not be switched on as planned shortly after 6pm.
Instead, it was later in the evening before Glasgow Street and the surrounding areas were dazzled with a splash of festive colour.
However, “the show must go on”, and so it did – as organisers ensured that the families of Ardrossan did not miss out on their slice of Christmas cheer.
Events began as planned at the Seahorse Bookstore, which hosted a festive story session, before Harbour Street was wowed by the beautiful harmonies of Ardrossan Academy’s choir.
Santa still paraded through the streets, powered by the Christmas spirit of locals who lined the streets to see him.
Over at the civic centre, the fairground and market were unaffected by the lack of power elsewhere to provide plenty of fun and entertainment.
Inside the centre, the power cut meant the building was out of action.
However, once again the community pulled together, and the neighbouring Church of the Nazarene stepped up to host live performances, Santa’s grotto and refreshments for the crowds.
It was far from straightforward, but the turning-on of Ardrossan’s Christmas lights truly showed what the festive season is all about.
A spokesperson for the organising Ardrossan Christmas Decorations Committee added their thanks for the support despite the setbacks.
They said: “Well, that was all a little unexpected! Thank you all for a great night tonight.
“The power might have gone out, but that wasn't enough to dampen the Christmas spirit on Glasgow Street! Thank you to everyone who came, and to everyone who helped make tonight such a success.
“We managed to raise £473.54, largely due to the efforts of the Ardrossan Youth Association.
"They have spent countless hours, over the last few weeks, making Christmas crafts which they have sold to raise money for Ardrossan Christmas Lights.
“The lights are now on, so make sure to swing by and enjoy them! Merry Christmas!”
