Major roadworks on the A737 between Ayrshire and Glasgow have now been cancelled until 2024.

Resurfacing works were due to get under way on the busy road on Monday night, but were suspended due to emergency works by another company in the area.

The work was expected to resume later this week.

But now trunk roads maintenance company Amey say the resurfacing will be rescheduled until an as-yet-unspecified date next year.

A spokesperson said: "Please be advised that due to emergency third party works in the area, works scheduled on the A737 between Roadhead roundabout and Clerksbridge Toll roundabout have been cancelled.

"These works will be rescheduled in 2024 and new dates will be communicated in due course."

When the work finally begins, it will see the road closed between 8pm and 6am each night - with drivers facing major diversions on journeys between Beith and Glasgow.

A signed diversion will be in place and will operate as follows:

Southbound traffic will be directed off the A737 at Linclive Interchange on to Linwood Road on to the A761 at Ferguslie, before turning right onto the A726 and following Barrhead Road and Hurlet Road and turning left onto the A736.

Traffic will then follow the B762, crossing over the M77 Junction 2 and turning right onto Boydstone Road and right onto Kennishead Road before following onto the B773 Parkhouse Road. Traffic will continue onto the A736 at Barrhead and follow to Lugton, turning right onto the B777 and re-joining the A737 at Beith.

Northbound traffic will be diverted via the same route in reverse.
