IT WAS cold, wet, windy and freezing cold, but Kilwinning care worker Declan Griffin braved it all.

The kind-hearted Buckreddan Care Centre worker took on a monumental task earlier this month as he looked to raise money for Dementia UK.

Declan, 22, trekked 30-miles on December 7, putting his body to the test in a bid to raise funds for a good cause.

The journey saw the young man walk along large parts of the Ayrshire coastline. It was a journey that took Declan nearly nine hours as he took over 50,000 steps and burned nearly 3,000 calories.

But it was all worth it for Declan, who raised an impressive £500 for the charity through his efforts.

Though it was a challenge worth doing for Declan, who knows just how much of an impact the disease can have on people.

"The line of work I’m in, I’m dealing with a lot of people who are suffering from dementia," he said.

"I wanted to set myself a challenge to raise money for charity to help people who are suffering."

And it was that very fact which drove the care worker onto the finish line despite the elements doing their best to put pale to his plans.

Declan commented: "The walk was tough as it was raining and muddy the whole day, but seeing the finishing mark edge closer just inspired me to keep going and finish the challenge.

"My colleagues and friends all said they were proud of me and happy for me. My work was delighted for me and proud of my efforts. A few residents even hugged me afterwards.

"I was relieved when it was over but I took a moment to feel proud of myself.

"I was happy with how much I raised for charity as it’s my first time doing this though it won't be the last as I am planning on doing something different to raise money again."

Declan also wished to thank all those who helped contribute to his fundraiser.
