PASSENGERS travelling on Ayrshire trains have been warned to expect delays as Storm Gerrit takes its toll on travel across the country.

Service operator ScotRail have informed those planning to travel by train that delays are likely to impact trains on all Ayrshire coastal services until at least 9am on Thursday, December 28.

The delays are set to impact all three of the four routes serving Ayrshire from Glasgow Central station.

The rail operator says that "severe weather" caused by Storm Gerrit will affect trains on the routes from Glasgow Central to Prestwick Town, Largs and Ardrossan Harbour.

Due to speed restrictions caused by the weather, those travelling to and from Prestwick and Ardrossan have been advised to expect delays of up to ten minutes on the route.

Journeys between the city and Largs are likely to be delayed by up to 15 minutes.

Amidst the ongoing issues, ScotRail have advised those planning to travel to check its app and website for any further disruption.

No rail replacement is due to be organised and customers are asked to consider alternative routes or travelling later where possible.

In addition, services on the Glasgow-Carlisle route, via Kilmarnock and Dumfries, were delayed or cancelled on Wednesday morning because of flooding between Sanquhar and Dumfries.

As this article was published, the disruption was expected to continue until 3pm on December 27.

ScotRail advised that those looking to travel should find an alternative route or consider travelling later while rail replacement services were arranged.
