CalMac has announced plans to run an extra ferry to Arran tonight (Wednesday) - if the weather holds up.

Assuming there's a lull in the windy weather that has battered the west coast and large parts of Scotland, the extra ferry will leave Ardrossan at 8.30pm on December 27.

That ferry will then be berthing overnight in Brodick, which means that tomorrow (Thursday's) 7am sailing from Ardrossan has been cancelled.

The company said in a social media post late this afternoon: "Due to the forecast of adverse weather, with wind speeds to increase, the vessel will berth overnight in Brodick.

"There will be an additional 8.30pm sailing departing Ardrossan, weather permitting. Due to the vessel berthing overnight in Brodick, the 7am departing Ardrossan on Thursday is cancelled.

"The Ardrossan-Brodick service is liable to disruption or cancellation at short notice due to adverse weather.

"Disrupting a sailing is a decision we do not take lightly because we know it will inconvenience our customers and the communities we serve.

"However, the safety of our customers and crew must come first.

"In this instance, the Master of the vessel has judged it is necessary in response to the assessment of adverse weather conditions.

"We’ll keep customers informed should there be any further changes in connection to this route. If you’ve not already done so, download our app or follow our Twitter @CalMac_Updates so we can provide you with timely updates, with the latest information we have available."
