THE railway line between Kilwinning and Largs is set to re-open after Network Rail conducted a full inspection this morning [Thursday, December 28].

The area, particularly at the Fairlie tunnelhead near the A78, experienced flooding yesterday, resulting in services between Glasgow Central, Largs and Ardrossan being terminated at Kilwinning.

Earlier today services had began to travel further along the line, though still only as far as Ardrossan South Beach.

Dramatic photos showed the extent of the flooding on the line and exactly why the services had to be altered.

Though with the issue now resolved, services are set to return to complete normality across North Ayrshire.

A ScotRail spokesperson said: "Good news, checks on the Largs route have now finished and this line can also reopen. Services will now be started from Largs."
