A Saltcoats chippy has been named the best in the whole of the south of Scotland.

The Eglinton Diner and Fish Fry recently picked up the award at the very first Scottish Fish and Chip Awards.

And owner Josephine Donald says she’s proud that she and her team have been recognised for their work.

She told the Herald: “It is excellent. We are all delighted.

“We were given a highly recommended award for the best fish team in Scotland, which means we took second place in the country.

“And, in the previous year, we won the Scottish Business Award for best chippy in Scotland.”

Josephine, who took over the Eglinton Diner five and a half years ago, says the judges were very thorough during their visit to Saltcoats – not only checking the quality of the fish and chips but also how friendly and efficient the staff were and the levels of cleanliness in the premises.

She added: “The staff have all been excellent and a big part of it is how the customers are served.

“We pay a lot of attention to service and every member of staff has a great attitude with our customers.

“They have played a big part in winning this award, both the servers and the fryers.

“The Eglinton is very much a family business too, with Josephine’s daughter, two nieces and her granddaughter working there.”

Congratulations to the whole team for their efforts from everyone at the Herald.
