A support group set up for parents of children with additional support needs (ASN) in Irvine and the Three Towns has been looking back on a successful first year.

The Facebook group was formed for Three Towns parents of ASN pupils back in January 2023 before joining forces with Irvine mums and dads later in the year.

The highlight of the year was a trip to Heads of Ayr Farm Park during the summer, when ASN youngsters from Ayrshire, Renfrewshire and Edinburgh enjoyed a fantastic day out, specially organised to suit the needs of the wee ones.

In December, the group came together for a big festive party and plans are already in hand for a series of events during 2024.

Irvine mum Emma Tricker said: "My husband Kenny and I felt alone after getting told our daughter Emilie was autistic as there isn't much support in the community for children with ASN.

"Around May 2023, I started talking to Amy Johnston, who had started a support group in the Three Towns area, with weekly groups for ASN families.

"In the summer, we joined forces and organised the day out to Heads of Ayr Farm Park.

"Seeing how relaxed the families were to enjoy a day out without any judgement was just amazing, so myself and Amy decided to keep planning these days.

"On November 25, we had a psychic night and raised £628 for our big Christmas party, which we had on December 16 at Woodwynd Community Centre.

"Over 100 ASN children and their families joined us and it was so amazing to see all the children's faces light up.

"We had Santa visiting and he was floating about so the children didn't feel pressured into going up to him.

"Uncle Billy was there making balloons and doing puppet shows and magic tricks. There were bouncy castles, soft play and sensory toys, and all the children loved it."

Emma added: "Myself and Amy have so much planned for our ASN Three Towns and Irvine group in 2024.

"We want to make this community more inclusive for not only our children, but all children with ASN, as we aren't the only parents out there who find it difficult and feel alone.

"All 804 members of our group feel the same way, and we want everyone to know that they aren't alone and that we are all in this together.

"We hope for more big fun days in 2024 for both ASN children and their parents and families. If anyone feels the same as our families felt, join our group and we can all make the change together."
