More complaints have been made about the stench of 'crude oil' seeping from the former Shell refinery site, which is set to become the new Ardrossan Campus.

As reported last week, neighbours -  particularly around Sweeney Court on the edge of the development site - claim the area has been "reeking" in recent weeks as contractors carry out test bores on the site to check toxicity.

North Ayrshire Council said work was being carried out to counter the smell, with the area being sprayed with deodorisers.

A number of residents have contacted us since then to say the smell is still prevalant.

And a quick check by a Herald reporter confirmed a heavy oil smell hitting houses next to the boundary fence.

Today, a spokesperson for North Ayrshire Council said: “As residents will be aware, clean up of the ground is being undertaken to remediate the site.

“This includes daily observations by the contractor and use of equipment to monitor air throughout the site, including at boundaries.

“To date, there has been no elevated level of odorants recorded above the health criteria being used for assessment. Odour suppressant equipment is also mobilised to relevant locations throughout the site as and when required.

“Environmental Health are aware of the odours, receive monitoring results and visit the site to ensure that the relevant legislation and best practicable means are being adopted by the contractor.”

Diggers moved on to the North Shore site last September to start remediation work on the 'toxic land'.

Plans for the campus were officially approved by North Ayrshire Council earlier that month.

In addition to the school building, which will house Winton Primary and its early years facility as well as Ardrossan Academy, the campus will also include sports pitches, a leisure pool and a public library.

However, before building work can start, remediation work on the site must completed to a satisfactory standard.
