North Ayrshire's primary pupils could be laughing soon - thanks to a competition to find the best joke across Scotland's schools.

And the winner of the 2024 VoiceBox Award is set to get £100 to spend on toys, plus £100 worth of books - while their school will get £500 worth of books for every pupil to enjoy

The event has been organised by the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT), who promote excellence for people with communication and swallowing needs.

Stephanie Boag, of South Beach Surgery in Ardrossan, said: "As the Voicebox Ambassador for North Ayrshire, I’m really keen to spread the word and give as many schools and pupils as possible the opportunity to raise awareness of communication in a fun and positive way.

"I would love to see lots of entries so that the funniest joke from North Ayrshire has the chance to come out on top at the national final!"

The best joke from North Ayrshire will be announced - appropriately enough - on April Fools Day 2024.

Glenn Carter, Head of RCSLT Scotland, said: “As we launch VoiceBox, we celebrate the importance of communication and the incredible potential within every child. Humour has the power to connect us, underscoring the importance of speech and language in our lives.

"We hope that this initiative will bring joy and laughter to kids across Scotland regardless of their background or communication difficulties.”

Running from now until April 1, 2024, the competition allows one entry per school. Finalists will be chosen across the 32 local authorities, with an in-person grand final compèred by comedian Zara Janjua at an event in the Scottish Parliament hosted by the Presiding Officer, Rt Hon Alison Johnstone MSP on June 2024.

If you think you're the funniest pupil in your school,  ask your teacher how you can get involved.
