Pupils and staff at St Anthony's Primary in Saltcoats held a big celebration last Friday after being awarded Gold status in UNICEF UK’s Rights Respecting School programme.

And they enjoyed a golden day filled with treats and fun to mark the occasion.

Headteacher Mrs Carr said: “Becoming a Gold Rights Respecting School is a huge achievement for our whole community.

"Our children, staff and families have worked incredibly hard, enhancing their knowledge and realisation of rights, contributing to positive changes for both within our community and for children across the world.

"Children’s rights are at the heart of all we do at Saint Anthony’s. It is our mission to empower our children as the change makers of Scotland and beyond.”

The school has been working with UNICEF UK for a number of years. They received their Silver certificate in March 2019 and were awarded Gold status in December.

Steven Kidd, professional advisor with the Rights Respecting Schools initiative, pointed out in his report that children at St Anthony's "confidently discussed a range of rights and why they are important and relevant to their lives".

He also said: "Rights are explicitly linked to all areas of the school's work - visible on displays linked across the curriculum and very prominent on the website and school communications.

"All adults are passionate about the rights respecting work of the school and the impact this is having on outcomes for children.

"Relationships are based on mutual respect and trust. Learning about rights is clearly affecting relationships in a positive way.

"The school has a warm, caring and nurturing ethos of the school, where the values of dignity, equity and respect are lived and valued by all."

Gold is the highest accolade given by UNICEF UK and shows a deep and thorough commitment to children’s rights at all levels of school life.

There are more than 600 schools across the United Kingdom that have received gold status from the scheme.
