Initial plans have been lodged for a community solar farm on Arran.

Arran Community Renewables has applied to North Ayrshire Council to see if an environmental impact assessment will be required for the proposed facility at Glenkiln at Lamlash.

The proposed site would be around 6.8 hectares in size, and would have a maximum generating capacity of six megawatts.

The panels will be mounted on frames which will be no higher than 3.5 metres in height.

The proposed development would be close to a small hydro scheme, and there is a proposal for new housing around 500 metres to the east of the site.

The area is currently used as agricultural land for sheep grazing, and the applicant says there will be no environmental impacts from the development.

Arran Community Renewables was founded in 2020, with the aim of islanders owning renewable energy.

The group aims to reduce Arran's carbon emissions by increasing the renewable energy generated on the island, and create a green community fund that will enable more environmental projects that benefit Arran.

The Arran proposals have gone public just a few days after plans for a solar farm on Cumbrae were approved by the Scottish Government.

The Cumbrae plans were refused permission by North Ayrshire Council last year, but that decision was overturned on appeal.
