BEITH athletics star Jemma Reekie has won her first-ever medal at a major senior event.

But after walking away with silver from the 800m final at the World Athletics Indoor Championship in Glasgow, the 25-year-old admitted to some disappointment that it wasn't gold.

It was a landmark occasion for Jemma who has been battling injuries and illness for large parts of her senior career so far.

But the North Ayrshire star was cheered on by a buoyant home crowd at the Emirates Arena as she took second place in two minutes and 2.72 seconds, just behind Ethiopia's Tsige Duguma.

Speaking to the BBC after the race: “I stood on that track and I didn’t want anything other than the win but (it’s) my first senior medal – I made some mistakes and I’ll learn something from it.

“It (was) really unpredictable but that’s what’s going to happen with all these girls running so fast and so many coming through.”

Now, the Garnock Valley star has her sights set on more medals at the upcoming Olympic Games in Paris.
