CHAMPAGNE corks were popping at Garnock Rugby Club on Saturday after the Lochshore men secured their second successive league title.

After claiming the Tennent’s Men’s West League Division One title last year, they followed it up by clinching the National Division 4 championship in style with a crushing win over Greenock Wanderers on Saturday.

The Lochshore side romped to the league title in convincing fashion, with a 26-25 defeat against Strathmore in their penultimate fixture their only loss of the campaign.

Garnock knew a win of any kind on Saturday would be enough to secure the championship - but they romped to the title in style, with a 66-7 win making mathematically certain of a triumph that's been on the cards for several weeks.

Head coach Grant Ruxton said: "Having that little bit of time for it to sink in, and reflect on some of the seen and unseen work from the season, it makes it all worth it.

"Thinking about how hard it is to win a league, never mind two in a row, it's a really good feeling."

Garnock racked up more than 800 points on their way to the title, with Ruxton and his players now aiming to finish the season on a high note in their final match, away to Murrayfield Wanderers on April 6.

"The games have presented different challenges," he said.

"We've been aiming to get better and being aware of complacency.

"I always felt we could be competitive in the league, but that's another testament to the guys and the work that's gone into everything throughout the year.

"We're hoping to see the season out on a high and then we'll look ahead to preparing for next season."

Realising how big an achievement it was to win the league so resoundingly, and to make it back-to-back titles, Ruxton admitted he and his players made the most of the occasion.

"It wasn't exactly a quiet night," he added.

"We took some time to enjoy the occasion and make the most of it after a long and challenging season so far."
