Parents in Ayrshire are being warned after reports of young people being added to "inappropriate" WhatsApp group chats.

Police are investigating following claims that "hundreds" of children have been added to group chats, with "indecent" images shared on the chats.

East Ayrshire Council bosses are now warning parents about the issue, and are urging them to keep an eye on their children's internet usage.

A council spokesperson said: "East Ayrshire Council can confirm that reports have been received of children and young people being added to group chats on an online platform, where the content has a level of inappropriateness.

"A message was issued via the school app asking parents and carers to make themselves aware of their child or young person's mobile phone usage and content."

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "An investigation is under way after we received a report relating to inappropriate communications on an online platform.

"The matter was reported on Tuesday, May 14 and enquiries are ongoing.”
