Diane Mathieson from Saltcoats came third in the Miss Scotland competition. The 19-year-old was congratulated by Big Brother star and Kilwinning man Mikey Hughes at the event at the Clyde Auditorium in Glasgow in May 2009.

President of the West Kilbride Burns Club Gordon Middleton handed over a cheque for £350 to Margaret Park and Jacqui Caldwell to help upgrade the Village Hall.

The youngsters from Kilwinning U11 girls football team were presented with the winners trophy at a 2009 Welsh football tournament by former Celtic manager John Barnes. And the young team included future Scotland and Chelsea star Erin Cuthbert. Judy Murray, the mum of tennis ace Andy Murray, visited Saltcoats Lawn Tennis Club in May 2009 to back a campaign to upgrade the complex. For the last four years the Saltcoats committee had been battling to raise £85,000 which would see all four courts resurfaced and turned into all-weather playing areas.
