Beith community stalwart Isobel Monahan was chosen as The Herald’s Local Hero to represent Cunninghame North at the official opening of the Scottish Parliament in 2004. In recognition of her tireless voluntary work, Isobel would accompany Allan Wilson MSP to Holyrood for the historic event on October 9.

Cunninghame North MP Brian Wilson announced he would be stepping down at the next election. The Labour man, who been MP since 1987, had served as Energy Minister under PM Tony Blair. He said: “I am quitting now purely because I think that you do your stint and you move on. Westminster is littered with people who have stayed on too long and are too old to do anything else.”

Scotland’s first ever day of wheelie bin racing was held at Castle Semple in August 2004, with contestants from North Ayrshire and beyond taking part in the event, which raised cash for some worthy local charities.

Kilwinning Rangers defender Paul Mullin enjoyed a fairytale testimonial at Abbey Park in August 2004 as the Buffs overcame a young side from his beloved Celtic. The highly entertaining game ended 2-0 to the home side, and attracted a crowd of more than 500. Mullin and his son Luke were given a warm reception by both teams.

Ardrossan gardener Gerald Blasby stunned fellow competitors at the weekend’s Largs Flower Show with his soup-er sized leek. Gerald was presented with the Best In Show trophy by Brisbane Queen Natalie Gillespie.

Ardeer Primary School teacher Jean Reid retired in style at the end of the 2004 term – as pupils and staff members put on a special 60’s day in her honour.
