BEITH JUNIORS 2

RENFREW FC 0

ALL the fixtures that survived on Saturday were sure to be heavily affected by the continuing gale force winds and this fixture was definitely no exception, with the efforts of players on both sides deserving credit for their attempts to play football at all.

Beith played down the slope and into the elements in the first half and Stephen Noble in particular delivered some fine crosses into the box but these went a begging with striker Thomas Collins in particular, guilty of failing to cash in on some decent opportunities. Renfrew created very little with their focus almost totally on keeping their goal intact. They almost made it until the hosts got a break just before the interval when a Keir Milliken driven cross was turned into his own net by unfortunate Frew defender McGillion.

Beith continued to dominate the bulk of play after the break but their strikers also continued to disappoint. Only in the last 15 minutes, following the introduction of subs McLean and Bradley, did the hosts look more potent up front. However Frew keeper McLeay made fine stops to deny Frize and Christie before he was beaten and the points secured by the hosts with six minutes remaining. Kenny McLean was the architect and eventual scorer when his guile set up Paul Frize before he was barged over in the box allowing the veteran striker the opportunity to score confidently from the spot.

Home goalie Stephen Grindlay only had one notable save to make in the entire match and that was after a defensive mistake allowed ex-Beith striker McKenna the chance.

Despite the performance being instantly forgettable, Beith will nonetheless be happy to have collected the points on a day more suitable for flying kites than playing football.

BEITH: Grindlay, McGlinchey, Noble, N Docherty, Green, Wilson, Christie, Frize, Milliken, Collins, Ramsey. Subs: McGowan, Bradley, McLean, Middleton, R Docherty

YOKER ATHLETIC 0

ARDROSSAN WINTON ROVERS 4

WINTON travelled to Govan to take on Yoker Athletic with an unchanged team looking to continue their push for promotion.

For the first 15 minutes, Yoker were the better team playing some good passing football and creating chances. In 15 minutes they came close to winning a penalty when they were awarded a free-kick just outside the box which came to nothing. Three minutes later Rovers had their first real attack, but David Smith’s dangerous cross was headed clear by the Yoker defence.

In 25 minutes the dangerous Greig Maitland picked the ball up out on the left and cut into the box but his shot was comfortably saved by Chris Lamb. On the half hour, s dangerous free-kick from David Smith had to be headed behind for a corner. Davie Cunningham had a shot from 20 yards go narrowly wide of the post on 35 minutes. In 40 minutes, Winton took the lead when David Smith crossed into the goalmouth and Yoker goalkeeper Ryan Mailey waited for the wind to carry the ball to him. However, Jamie McKenna got there first and rose to head home.

Rovers made the better start to the second half and were beginning to get some room down the right wing. On the hour, David Adams played the ball over to the near post, but Jamie McKenna’s shot was deflected for a corner. Three minutes later Rovers doubled their lead when the ball came to Andy Hunter and he shot low through a crowd of players into the net for his first goal for the club to make it 2-0. Four minutes later Rovers increased their lead from a corner that was cleared out to Jamie Cunningham, who from 25 yards hit a first time shot in off the left-hand post to make it 3-0 to the visitors.

On 90 minutes Winton won another free-kick on the edge of the box and although Mailey made a great save from Jamie Cunningham’s shot the ball stayed in play and was played back into the near post where the keeper blocked the shot. Although the ball broke to Dylan Stevenson, who fired the ball into the roof of the net for his first goal for the club to make it 4-0 in added time.
