Ardrossan Winton Rovers manager Gavin Friels says his side need to get back to basics after they lost 6-2 to Glasgow Perthshire at the weekend.

Friels went into the West of Scotland Football League Conference C clash looking to overturn Rover’s recent poor run and pick up a win on his debut game in charge.

However, it was a nightmare start for the club as they found themselves 2-0 down early on at Winton Park thanks to a double from Paul Brennan.

Jason Walker scored for the hosts to cut the deficit before Steven Logan regained the Shire’s two goal lead.

In the second half, the away side pulled away thanks to another goal from Brennan and a double from Ryan Gemmell.

Chris McGowan scored a late header but it was just a consolation as Winton picked up another defeat.

Speaking to the Herald, Friels said: “We need to get back to basics. We have learned that we need to take it a step back more than coming in with fresh new ideas.

“We need to build from the bottom to get a bit of confidence back in.

“They are on a bad run at the moment, so it is only human nature that the players will be low on confidence.

“But I think we came in and tried to start on the front foot and get an injection of some freedom into the players.

“Obviously we tried that and it was not there at the weekend, so we need to take a step back.”
