A TEAM of rising football stars from West Kilbride have shown they can be competitive no matter where they play.

Youth side West Kilbride Deltas travelled to Donegal in Ireland for the Stevie Doherty Memorial Tournament - and returned home as winners.

The local team lifted the Galway Crystal Vase after defeating the host side Dunree United, a team who featured players a year older than the Deltas, in the showpiece final.

It was a superb effort from the youngsters, who gave it their all and battled their way to a 2-1 win.

The result certainly pleased their purple-clad 'ultras' who provided superb support throughout the tournament.

They watched on as the Deltas put in their best performance of the weekend for last.

The youngsters dominated the final match and took a deserved lead through a wonderful strike from captain Manus Gallanagh.

James McNeillie then doubled the lead in the second half when he made a terrific run from midfield, beat a defender and netted a cool finish past the onrushing goalkeeper.

Dunree then threw everything they had at the travelling villagers, and did pull one goal back, but defence and goalkeeper, Ali Stevenson, were imperious and helped secure the win.

The final whistle was blown by a former Ukrainian international goalkeeper turned referee who was taking charge of the game - and unsurprisingly, joyous celebrations followed.
