THE Memorial Field in Ardrossan was the place to be on May 20 and 21.

That's because it was the centre of the action, as the venue for which Ardrossan Accies RFC held their annual youth rugby tournament.

Saturday saw the under 18s in action in the fast paced seven-a-side variation of the game, which is still played on a full sized pitch.

Visiting teams from Ayr, Marr, Kilmarnock, Whitecraigs joined the hosts for some thrilling rugby followed by the usual post-match mingling and barbeque.

Then on Sunday, the tournament expand into under 13s, 14s, 15s and 16s over the course of the whole day.

With over 300 players and as many coaches and spectators, the club was a buzzing hive of activity.

Once again the rugby was fast and exciting, with some wonderful flourishes of speed and skill on display.

Teams from Kilmarnock, Garnock, Cartha, Whitecraigs, Birkmyre and Allen’s Glen joined the Accies lads to put on the show.

And amongst the action there was some home success - meaning not all the trophies had to leave Ardrossan.

The under 13 tournament was won by Ardrossan, much to the delight of players, parents and coaches alike.

Kilmarnock took the silverware at under 14s with the Accies in second place, while Birkmyre were winners of the under 15 tournament.

The last component of the tournament was the under 16s event, which was won well by Ardrossan having gone through the pool stages unbeaten and then overcoming Whitecraigs emphatically in the final.

With the sun shining and the post-match barbeque in full swing, the club ended the day on a high note and look forward to hosting the fixture again next season.
