A TEAM of North Ayrshire athletes can now call themselves the fastest in Scotland.

It comes as North Ayrshire Athletics Club's (NAAC) under 17 girls team won big at the 2023 National Relay Championships.

Team NAAC pulled on their club vests and headed to Scotstoun for this year's event only last month.

There was a fantastic turnout across the board with NAAC putting two teams in each race across the under 13, 15 and 17 age groups.

Each team took on the medley of 2 x 600m, 2x200m, 4x100m and 4x300m respectively.

And it was one of the under 17 girls teams who came home with gold, securing top spot in the 4x100m.

Naideen, Jaymee, Jessie and Shannon were crowned Scottish champions when Shannon ran the final leg and dipped in in first place.

With a quick turnaround the winning girls headed back onto the track for the 4x300m timed finals, in the first heat they dominated the race and clocked a new pb of 2.53.67 to secure them overall bronze medals.

It was an amazing achievement for the girls who are not only in their first year of the age group, but they train as combined event athletes and a footballer - rather than soley focussing on sprint races.

The achievement was hailed by coaches at the club, who couldn't have been happier for the girls.

Nikki Caig, combined events coach, said: “These girls train extremely hard all year round, putting themselves out their comfort zone continually so they can achieve these moments at national level for their club.

"They showed true grit and determination for each other and their club."

President Kirsteen Brown added: “These accolades would simply not be possible without the hard work, dedication and support of our volunteer coaches.#teamNAAC #morethanaclub."
