AHEAD of the kick-off of the new senior women's football season, the Three Towns will be represented for the first time.

Earlier this year, Ardrossan Winton Rovers confirmed the formation of a senior women's side.

And on Wednesday, August 9, they played their final friendly ahead of the season's kick off.

The new side lost that match 1-0 against a strong Ayr United Development side at Winton Park.

It provided them with great preparation and insight into what the season ahead will hold - as they faced off against a side who they will be playing in the league this year.

"The game was quite good," commented girl's section club secretary Alex Keir. "They played quite well and played some good football."

Alex also looked ahead to what he hopes will be a season to remember for this newly established side.

He added: "I think the aim for the team is just to establish themselves and maybe have a wee cup run.

"We want to have something they can look back on - to come from nothing to this and give them a good foundation to build on."

After their five pre-season friendlies, hope is certainly high that the Winton women can give the Three Towns a side to be proud of.

While Alex also wants the club to go the right way about things.

He said: "Our plan was is to do things sort of differently to how other teams run at this level.

"The women's team won't be paying to play so that they can get focussed on playing.

"It's been great so far, we have had great support from the youth section and the first team."

Moving forward, Alex hopes that Gordon McKinlay's side can turn out to be something that plenty of girls hope to be part of.

He commented: "It's fantastic, now we have got under 12s, 14s and 16s and the women's team.

"The Three Towns has got a full women's pathway. On Wednesday we had some of the under 14s and 16s watching.

"I would just encourage every woman who is interested in football to come down, get involved and support them."

Winton's season kicks off this Sunday, August 13, as they travel to face Dalbeattie Star at 4pm in the first match of the Scottish Women's Football League South.
