Ayrshire judo star Scott Cusack has won Gold at the British Championships in Sheffield.

The 27-year-old former Largs Academy pupil beat the top two seeds in the competition to take the British title.

Scott was a promising rugby player with Ayr Rugby Club and Ardrossan Accies before deciding to concentrate on judo at the age of 18.

His father, Billy Cusack, is a former Olympic judo star and is now a coach, while his mother Loretta Doyle, of West Kilbride, won the under-52kg event at the 1982 World Judo Championships, and the under-56 kg event at the 1990 Commonwealth Games.

She also won European Judo Championships titles in 1983 and 1992 and now runs the Loretta Doyle Foundation which helps fund young judo enthusiasts.

Scott's decision to switch sports paid off this week when he defeated top seed England's Lachlan Moorhouse - the 2022 Commonwealth Games Gold Medallist - in the final.

He also beat the second seed in the semi final on his way to the gold medal.

Scott is just getting back into competitive Judo on recovering from a knee injury, and has put himself well into contention for inclusion in the Paris 2024 Olympics representing Great Britain.
