Young footballers from West Kilbride travelled to Perthshire at the weekend and conquered all before them to win the Luncarty FC Summer Tournament.

The West Kilbride Deltas' 2011 squad qualified from a group containing, among others, Auchterarder and Crieff to meet the hosts in the final.

The final was a football fairy tale as the squad showed an indomitable spirit and refused to buckle, despite a large partisan home crowd.

The home support were in raptures after they opened the scoring on 12 minutes.

But Drew Neilson levelled things for West Kilbride with a tenacious solo effort just before half time. He drove in from the left and struck a fierce drive that the keeper could only parry. Drew reacted first and smashed the loose ball high into the net.

It was the least the North Ayrshire lads deserved as they had taken a firm grip of the game.

The second half was dominated by the West Kilbride boys, who played excellent passing football, as they had done all tournament.

With 10 minutes to go, they earned a free kick 30 yards out. Up stepped Geo McFadden who delivered an unstoppable strike into the Luncarty keepers top left hand corner.

The Purple Ultras, who had set up camp and provided the best support of the day, including a West Kilbride Wave, erupted!

The drama wasn’t over though. In the last minute, the hosts were awarded a disputed penalty by the referee.

The crowd fell quiet as the number nine from Luncarty stepped up to take the strike. He hit a powerful shot but keeper Ali Stevenson pulled off a superb diving save.

The rebound was cleared and the final whistle followed quickly.

The visitors went wild and the party carried on late into the night. The cherry on top for the Deltas was the award of the 'player of the tournament' prize to James McNeillie. Overall the weekend was definitely WKD!
